Eco Idiots

Everything is green. People think that if they buy green it will save the world. Ads and labels proclaim how products are eco-friendly or biodegradable under the guidelines issued by the Federal Trade Commission in 1992. However, no one is insuring the ads and labels are truthful. Since May 2000, the FTC has taken legal action against only three companies for breaking the guidelines and those all occurred on the same day, June 9, 2009, the day Congress began hearings about environmental marketing.

When everyone does a little bit for the environment, it adds up to a small, insignificant improvement. However, if everyone made major changes in their lifestyles to improve the environment, major, significant improvements could be made. The problem is that major changes mean giving up things we enjoy, while small changes, even though they mean little improvement to the environment, make us feel good about ourselves as we go about our daily lives damaging the environment in other major ways.
